School of Computing Lecturer recognised among Top 100 Quantum Science professionals worldwide

19 December 2025

Dr Jonte R. Hance, Lecturer in Applied Quantum Foundations at Newcastle University, has been named in The Quantum 100, a list of the top professionals worldwide working in quantum science. The collection is part of UNESCO’s ‘International Year of Quantum Science and Technology’ initiative marking 100 years of quantum mechanics.

Dr Hance joined Newcastle University’s School of Computing in March 2024 as a lecturer and early-career researcher and currently leads one of the school’s research groups (Advanced Model-Based Engineering and Reasoning), which includes the School’s quantum computing research.

They are also passionate about communicating complex quantum topics to diverse audiences and have had media coverage in New Scientist, VICE and Scientific America, as well as 26 articles published in journals including Nature Physics, npj Quantum Information, and Quantum Science and Technology.

Dr Hance said “I'm incredibly honoured to have been included in the Quantum 100. To me, my inclusion reflects an acknowledgement that quantum foundations is essential for building the quantum science and technologies of the future. While we're doing amazing engineering work worldwide building on what we currently know of quantum phenomena, we also know there's so much more in quantum to discover which will one day be transformational - and that looking into quantum foundations is our root to those potentially-revolutionary future discoveries!”
