Laura Heels

Lecturer

Background

I received my MComp (Hons) Computer Science with Security and Resilience from Newcastle University in 2013. I joined the school in 2014 as a Transition Officer supporting stage one students with the transition into university life. I am now a lecturer, teaching UG and PG students, I also chair the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee for the school .


I also have a role in the SAgE faculty as Gender Champion. 


I am also studying a part time PhD  in gender bias in computing tools and education in the Teaching Innovation Group and being supervised by Dr Marie Devlin.

Teaching

I am the Stage 3 co-ordinator.

I teach on the following modules in the academic year:

  • CSC1032 - Computer Systems Design and Architectures
  • CSC3422 - Website Construction and Management (Server-side) 
  • CSC8005 - Software Engineering Team Project

I also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations in the following themes:

  • Equality and Diversity in Computing
  • Computing Education
  • Web Technologies

Research

My research area is computing education, with a particular focus on equality and diversity.
