EPiC: Educational Practice in Computing

The Educational Practice in Computing (EPiC) group formed in 2014. We conduct research into all aspects of teaching and learning Computer Science. This benefits our students, industry and wider society.

Aims and activities

The main aims of EPiC are to:

  • use our expertise to benefit those in wider society seeking access to digital technologies and skills
  • ensure that our curricula are relevant and forward-thinking, helping our students develop essential skills and knowledge

Our activities are wide, varied and include the following benefits:

  • our teaching practices increase the confidence, knowledge, skills and employability of our graduates
  • we provide insight and opportunities for our students to contribute to solving real world problems for industry
  • we work with industry and schools to provide outreach and CPD experiences for staff and pupils to help widen participation
  • we use our expertise and experience to contribute to ongoing curriculum reviews
  • we contribute to and help to support digital skill development throughout the University

Research impact

EPiC works on developing frameworks, materials and tools for computer science education. This includes developing pedagogical practices with Artificial Intelligence. 

This will aid skill development and learning at all levels of computer science education and across other disciplines.

Collaborators

EPiC works closely with local schools on outreach activities. We also have strong links with local authorities and industrial partners.
