John Lloyd joined what was then the Computing Laboratory of Newcastle University as a postgraduate student in 1967, after obtaining a degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester. He obtained a PhD in 1972.
He became a Research Officer in the Laboratory in 1970, and was promoted to a Lectureship in 1973 and to a Senior Lectureship in 1994. He became Head of the Department of Computing Science in 1997, and was Head of the School of Computing Science from its establishment in 2002 until 2006. From 2006 to 2008 John served as Head of the School of Natural Sciences, whilst maintaining some teaching activities in Computing Science. He has held visiting appointments at Northwestern University (1974) and at the University of Delaware (1985). He retired in October 2008.
John's research interests, originally in numerical analysis, subsequently extended to cover aspects of computer graphics and of parallel computation, particularly for numerical and graphics problems. He has taught a wide range of courses, and acted as external examiner at a number of institutions in the UK and abroad. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and has served as a BCS academic assessor and as a member of its Academic Accreditation Committee He is a former secretary of the executive committee of the Council of Professors and Heads of Computing, the UK subject body for Computing.
John coordinated the School's very successful Impact return for the 2014 Research Evaluation Framework, and is a member of the Impact Steering Group for REF 2020. He also provides other general support and advice to the School, e. g. concerning accreditation, and serves on other University committees.
John has been a member of the University Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body since 2009 and has chaired the AWERB since 2013. He has coordinated the North-Eastregion AWERB Hub since 2015.
In 2017 John was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University in recognition of "his exceptional contribution to the work of the University".
