Later Life Audio and Radio Cooperative

Showcasing diverse talk-based audio content created by older adults.

About the research project

The Later Life Audio and Radio Co-operative (LLARC) is a direct outcome of an interdisciplinary PhD project.

It involved a programme of participatory action research. This focused on facilitating civic participation in later life.

LLARC was developed from an initial collaboration in Newcastle, but has the potential to become an international initiative.

It has rapidly evolved into a UK-wide network working on age-related issues. The network includes:

  • older content creators
  • age-inclusive radio stations
  • third-sector organisations
  • local authorities
  • academic researchers
The greater representation of older adults

LLARC showcases diverse talk-based audio content created by older adults. It advocates for greater representation of older adults in public debates about ageing societies.

Awards

In 2021, LLARC won the Newcastle University Engagement and Place award. These awards recognise and celebrate great examples of collaboration between universities, partners and the public.

LLARC features as an age-friendly case study in the Centre for Ageing Better's guide, ‘Community radio for and by people in later life’.
