Research & Innovation Showcase: Data Science and AI

On 4th June we held the Research and Innovation Showcase on Data Science and AI.

Organised by the School of Computing and the NUCoRE Data Science and AI, the event welcomed over 200 delegates from academia, industry and government. The event was officially launched by Prof. Matthew Grenby, PVC Research and Innovation. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the day.

The day featured expert talks on topics such as:

  • Generative AI
  • Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Computer vision
  • AI safety and ethics

as well as real-world applications in health, space, utilities, manufacturing, engineering, and environmental monitoring.

Highlights included two keynotes, thought-provoking panel discussions, interactive poster sessions, demos and plenty of networking opportunities for industry professionals, and researchers in the field.

Deepayan Bhowmik, Director of Research in the School of Computing who led the event, said: “We're excited about the future of AI and data science and proud to be leading research in this field.


“I would like to give special thanks to Prof Boguslaw Obara for his Professorial Lecture on the 'Current State of AI: Challenges and Opportunities,' in which he also spoke about his excellent research conducted over the past two decades. I extend my gratitude to our industry speaker Dr Guillermo Infante, Engineering Director at Sage Plc. who provided an excellent keynote on ‘Impact of Agentic AI on SMEs’.” 

Matt Linsley, Business, Innovation and Skills Manager, who helped to organise the Showcase, said: “Events like this reaffirm the importance of strong partnerships and collaboration between academia, government and industry in driving innovation and shaping the future together.
