Background

I am a qualified chartered accountant and a CFA Charterholder with more than 30 years of experience in academic and professional education. After spending 10 years in accounting roles, culminating as a Financial Controller for a Financial Services company, I moved into professional education to teach accountants and finance professionals towards their professional and threshold competency qualifications. I transitioned into management roles, eventually taking responsibility for the UK wide activities of BPP's accountancy, financial services, actuarial and HR provision. After leaving BPP in 2011, I built a successful training and consultancy business with a client portfolio that included ACCA, Pearson HE and Baillie Gifford.

Academic Career

I joined University of Liverpool at their London campus in 2013 as a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Programme Director for their MSc Finance and Investment Management. Having successfully built a strong reputation and good student numbers, I moved on to join Newcastle University Business School in January 2018.

Roles and Responsibilities

Senior Lecturer within the Accounting and Finance subject group at the Newcastle University Business School. 

Associate Dean of Education for the HaSS Faculty,

Lead liaison for the CFA Institute's University Affiliation Program across all relevant MSc and BSc programmes.

Other Current Roles

I am currently Treasurer, Trustee and Company Director of Young Women's Project, a charity based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear that works with young women and young mothers and supports them with their education, work and life prospects.

Teaching

I am currently module leader on ACC3006 International Financial Management, a stage 3 compulsory module on the BSc Accounting and Finance degree programme.

I am currently module leader on NBS8335 Corporate Finance (an optional module for several MSc programmes including MSc Finance).

I am Director of Studies for Postgraduate Taught programmes at NUBS and I am also an academic selector for the N400 BSc Accounting and Finance programme. I manage professional body accreditation relationships for the N400 programme and I am Principal Contact for our relationship with the CFA Institute.

My teaching experience encompasses financial reporting and analysis, corporate finance, equities and bonds, portfolio management, financial regulation and ethics. I have taught towards professional qualifications such as ACCA, ACA, CIMA, CFA, AAT and threshold competency programmes for regulated persons within financial services. I have also taught on graduate development programmes for many of the major banks, investment banks and fund managers.

Research Interests

Development of critical reflective capacity within Masters students on finance and accounting programmes.

Pedagogical research on the incorporation of generative AI tasks into the pre-read for a closed book exam.
