Get Involved
The Language Resource Centre organises various language activities throughout the year which Newcastle University students can get involved with.
See below for a brief overview of the types of paid work roles available:
Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Group Leaders
Language conversation groups are hour-long, weekly sessions during term-time. Group leaders should be native-level speaking students. The groups (max 8 people) are intended to provide an informal and relaxed way to practise speaking. Group leaders are expected to plan and prepare the content of the sessions themselves with guidance and advice from LRC staff.
Languages required: Chinese; English; French; German; Italian; Japanese; Spanish
Number of hours: 2-4 per week depending on language
Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) 1-to-1 Advisors
1-to-1 Advisors are required to be available for 1-to-1 appointments (20 mins) with students who may wish to practise language or discuss any difficulties learning the target language.
Languages required: Arabic; British Sign Language; Chinese; French; German; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Portuguese; Russian; Spanish
Number of hours: 1-2 per week depending on language
Taster Session Leaders
Taster session leaders are required to prepare and deliver an introductory session for absolute beginners wishing to have a try at learning a new language.
Languages required: All welcome
Number of hours: Approx 2-5 per term
Student Language Ambassadors
The aim of the Student Language Ambassador role is to promote language learning to school pupils. The role includes helping out with school visit days and other language events to give talks and language tasters etc.
Languages required: All welcome
Number of hours: Various ad-hoc
