We have an extensive range of language learning facilities and resources.

Multimedia Resources

Movies

Members have instant access to more than 8,000 movies and TV shows in dozens of languages.

You can access these on campus or off-campus using your NU login via our World TV and Film (IPTV) platform.

You'll be able to:

  • enjoy your favourite movie or TV programme (with or without subtitles)
  • watch via any available browsers and devices

Live satellite TV

Fancy watching live German TV shows or want to catch today's news in French? No problem. Just log onto our World TV and Film (IPTV) platform.

Choose View then Live TV and you can watch 40 channels from around the world.

Whilst accessing from the Old Library Building, the only available browser to use is Internet Explorer.

DVD collection

Browse hundreds of titles in our DVD collection.

Audio-visual materials

You can improve your listening skills, many books come with accompanying audio materials.

Software Resources

Our Centre PCs have state-of-the-art language learning software. This is designed to make language learning fun and easy. Here are just some of the software packages available.

Access to software in the LRC may be limited due to availability of workstations.

Audacity

Audacity allows you to record live audio, cut, copy and mix sounds together. You can alter the speed and pitch of your recordings.

Clear Pronunciation (Clarity)

This software helps you recognise and pronounce all 43 English phonemes. Test your pronunciation against audio of native speakers.

Lexibar

Many languages have special letters or characters.

Lexibar is a convenient toolbar of all special characters in your chosen language. It sits on your desktop as you type.

Read Up - Speed Up

A program to improve learner reading speeds. You can read a variety of texts in a range of subject areas.

Sanako Pronounce & Pronounce Live

This software allows you to copy and paste any piece of text and hear how it should be correctly pronounced.

You can also record yourself speaking. The software will grade your pronunciation accuracy.

Sanako Pronounce is currently available in the Centre for:

  • Spanish

Access to a remote version of the software (Sanako Pronounce Live) is available, please email the LRC to request access. Sanako Pronounce Live provides access to:

We have self-study materials in over 100 languages.

We don't offer a translation service, but you can advertise translation services on the Centre's notice boards. Please contact us for details.
