Sustainability Officer

Background

I oversee many sustainability operations across the University, working closely with my team, others in Estates and the wider University to improve sustainability and energy efficiency at Newcastle University. Main responsibilities include: 

Environmental and Energy Management Systems (EMS and EnMS)

  • maintain and internally audit the University's ISO 14001 certified EMS  to improve environmental and energy performance across the University
  • monitor legislative compliance for all areas of environmental, energy (and other applicable) laws

Energy

  • energy monitoring, measuring and targeting 
  • energy saving projects, including SALIX funded projects
  • electricity invoicing and validation 

Heating and Building Management Systems

  • monitoring the University's Building Management Systems (BMS) and responding to temperature requests to adhere to the University Heating Policy

Water

  • water monitoring for the campus and satellite sites, to reduce water wastage and identification of leaks and appliance failures
  • invoicing, validation and contract management

Engagement

  • presence at University Welcome Events, to tell new starters about sustainability at the University and the remit of the team
  • monitor the Sustainable Campus social media accounts
  • general engagement events

Carbon

  • work with colleagues around the University to report and reduce our scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions, including staff and student commuting, business travel, waste, and water

Waste

  • organise furniture reuse throughout the University, particularly for building clear outs 
  • general waste and recycling enquiries
