Christmas Switch Off 2022

As we get ready for the Christmas break, we need to get ready to give our buildings a break too.

Date/Time: December 2022

Venue: Newcastle University

Switching everything off that can be switched off will save energy that, in turn, saves carbon dioxide emissions.

When switching off your work area, it is helpful to organise a switch off team that can ensure the actions are completed and doing a final sweep of your area.

Our posters for accommodationoffices and labs communicate the guidance below and can be shared digitally and printed to be displayed in your workspace.

Offices

Please switch off:

  • Computers and monitors
  • Kettles
  • Printers and photocopiers
  • Other appliances
  • Lights

And please close all windows!

The last general waste and recycling collections are on the morning of Friday 23rd December.

Fridges and freezers

Dispose of food in your green food waste bins and recycle packaging where appropriate. Last bin collections are on the morning of Friday 23rd December.

Both internal and external waste and recycling bins will not be emptied after the morning of Friday 23rd December to the morning of Thursday 5th January. Staff who have foodstuffs or drinks in their office after their bins have been emptied are therefore asked, for hygiene purposes, to take their rubbish to the external O'Briens/Biffa bins.

Please switch off and clean/defrost your fridges and freezers before the break.

Labs

Where safe to do so, please switch off as much lab equipment as possible over the festive period.

Please switch off unused:

  • Drying cabinets
  • Fume cupboards
  • Other equipment

The last collections for the following lab wastes are as follows:

  • Chemical Waste (Avanti) - W/C 5th December
  • Yellow Clinical Waste - Tuesday 20th December
  • Offensive Tiger Waste collections - Thursday 22nd December

If you have any questions, please email the Sustainability Team and we'll be happy to help.
