Christmas Switch Off 2023

As we get ready for the Christmas break, we need to get ready to give our buildings a break too.

Date/Time: December 2023

Venue: Newcastle University

Switching everything off that can be switched off will save energy that, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

When switching off your work area, it is helpful to organise a switch off team who can ensure actions are completed and do a final sweep of your work area.

Print out our handy checklist posters (PDF: 144 KB), and read the checklists below.

Offices

Switch off:

  • Computers
  • Monitors
  • Lights and lamps
  • Printers
  • Photocopiers
  • Fridges that are empty and clean (if the plug is easily accessible)
  • Shredders
  • Mobile phone chargers

And close all windows!

Labs

Switch off (if they are not in use over the break):

  • Lights
  • Computers and monitors
  • Centrifuges
  • Microscopes
  • Fume cupboards
  • Sterilisers/Dishwashers
  • Ovens/Drying cabinets

And close all windows!

Accommodation

Switch off:

  • Lights and lamps
  • Toasters
  • TVs and game consoles
  • Microwaves
  • Chargers
  • Printers

And close all windows!

Waste and recycling

Office bin suites (non-recyclable, paper, plastic and cans) will be emptied on the morning of the Friday 22nd December. If you have food in your workspace after this time, take it outside to the wheelie bins of your building at the end of the day.
