If we have a stream of data (ie tweets) and that stream of data goes through a series of nodes that do some processing on the data (following a process to get some results/understanding); if any of those nodes crashes (which can happen quite often), we are trying to find a way to recover from that crash without losing any data and without forcing any node to resend the data (ie exactly-once send semantics) in an acceptable time scale and cost.
