Professor Quentin Anstee
Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences
Professor Quentin Anstee took up the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in August 2025. The Faculty is one of the largest and most successful centres for research-led medical education in the UK, with 5 teaching schools and 3 multi-disciplinary research institutes.
A practicing clinician, Professor Anstee is an Honorary Consultant Hepatologist for the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust. He trained in medicine at University College London, where he was awarded First Prize in Medicine in the Final MBBS examination (The Philip Seth Belasco & Douglas Cree Prize, 1997). He received his PhD from Imperial and completed his post-graduate specialist training at St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College Healthcare). Professor Anstee returned to his native North East in 2010, where his translational and clinical research has extended from the bench to the bedside, with a particular focus on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of Metabolic-dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).
Professor Anstee is an NIHR Senior Investigator and has been named as one of the world’s most influential researchers in the Web of Science list of Highly Cited Researchers, amongst the top 1% of scientists by citation metrics. His most recent positions have included the Dean of Research & Innovation and the Ruth & Lionel Jacobsen Chair of Personalised Medicine, which recognises his strong track record in medical science and across disciplines.
