Mother Tongue Other Tongue: Competition and Celebration

The LRC has worked with International Newcastle, the Association for Language Learning and school pupils in the region to facilitate the acclaimed Mother Tongue Other Tongue poetry competition and celebration. This will be launched as part of the Express Yourself North East Festival of Languages  in March 2023.

This National Laureate education project was first established by Professor Carol Ann Duffy (UK Poet Laureate 2009-2019) in collaboration with Manchester Met University in 2010. It is a celebration of cultural diversity and the numerous languages that are spoken by pupils in the schools of the UK.

The mother tongue element is for those school pupils who do not speak English as their first language or whose family home language is not English, whilst the other tongue element is for pupils who are learning another language in school.

The Chancellor of Newcastle University Imtiaz Dharker comments on this project:

You can find out more about the Express Yourself: Festival of Languages North East Mother Tongue Other Tongue 2022 celebration and view an anthology of this year's entries on the Express Yourself NE Website.
