Meet David

Heritage Studies, Media, and Cultural Studies MA, Class of 2009

About David

Current role: Castle Team and Learning Manager, Newcastle Castle

Did your degree help you find work in the sector?

I think so, and the placement definitely did, as it gave me the practical experience for my CV which helped me to get my foot in the door, so to speak.

What skills and knowledge have you found useful in your career?

Doing the course really changed what it was I wanted to do within the sector, and gave me an appreciation of heritage education work – which is still what I do now!

How would you describe your time at Newcastle?

I have to say, despite only being about 4 years older than most people on the course (I didn’t go straight into the MA), I did feel old at first! Everyone was really nice though, and I made some firm friends who I’m still in touch with (most of whom still work in heritage as well).

What did you enjoy the most?

There were a lot of enjoyable bits, but the placement was my favourite part. It gave me a really great range of experience, working with some really talented colleagues, and every day was different.

What advice would you give to students starting the course now?

Don’t pigeonhole yourself – get as wide a range of experience as you can early on. Not only will that help with finding work later on, but you might find something you never thought of that you really enjoy!
