About Min
I am a PhD student in the School of Arts & Cultures at Newcastle University enrolling in January 2025. My major is Media, Culture and Heritage. My research primarily focuses on Chinese fandom, gender and pop culture.
Project description
My project is based on East Asian context. In details, it bridges Chinese idols’ female anti-fandom and gender, trying to explore how gender is discussed and negotiated in women’s anti-fandom practices towards idols in China.
It tries to find out the transmission mechanisms of these practices; discourses, especially gendered discourses, used by these female anti-fans; and the interactions between these anti-fans and generative AI.
Among these, Boys’ Love fandom and the relationship between idols’ female anti-fandom and generative AI are main focuses. Netnography and questionnaire are methods for collecting data. Then, text mining, content analysis, multimodal discourse analysis, and reflexive thematic analysis are main approaches for analyzing the research data.
Research interests
My research interests include pop culture, especially, East Asian fandom; gender; and AI. Among these, I am highly interested in exploring how AI and gendered discourses are conducted in pop culture. Netnography and digital methods are main methods for me to collect data. Furthermore, I am interested in discourse analysis as well, especially paying attention to the usage of metaphors. Additionally, Nvivo and SPSS are tools I would like to use for analysing data.
Personal interests
I like running, playing football, watching TV series, and travelling during the leisure time. I run for ten kilometres everyday.
