Food Waste Collection Event
29 December 2025
Event: Food waste management
Diogo Monteiro co-organized a Community Engagement event integrated in the Festival of Social Science 2025, with the Insights Northeast team, to share the results of the ongoing research collaboration to support the Household Food Waste Collection Scheme being introduced by the Newcastle City Council. The event, held at the Riverside Community Health, Carnegie Building was well attended. There was a demonstration from the waste management team on how the bins are collected on the kerbside. Participants were asked to rank the importance of barriers, solutions and actionable insights. With respect to barriers, bin design, lack of knowledge and lack of motivation were ranked highest- an interesting and diverse mix of barriers. For how to encourage people to engage with the food waste collection, participants ranked education and community engagement the highest, alongside reminders in various formats. When asked what the council specifically should do to increase engagement in food waste collection, engagement and information activities were ranked most highly.
