Newcastle academic shines a spotlight on rural economy for policymakers

The English countryside alone contributes over a million enterprises and £250b GVA to the UK economy and, although farming is still an important element, the range of businesses is diverse and interconnected.

Professor Jeremy Phillipson shared insights on these and related topics from research carried out at Newcastle’s Centre for Rural Economy when he gave evidence at the Parliamentary Rural Economy Committee this week.

He spoke about the important contribution rural businesses can make to the Government’s Industrial Strategy, but also warned of the need to consider specific challenges rurally based enterprises face.

The committee session may be viewed on line.
