Education Partnership Approval Process - PGR provision

The university has a framework for the development of doctoral level partnerships, which provides information about the expectations associated with such arrangements.

Step 1 - Initial Idea

Ideas for education partnerships can come from a variety of sources and your first point of call should be a discussion with your Faculty PGR Dean and Registry and Education Services colleagues.

When the idea has formed into a firmer proposal the first stage is University level endorsement to proceed to the formal approval process.  This University review is undertaken by the Strategic Education Partnerships Group, whose membership includes the PVC Education and PVC Global.  Full details are available in the SEPG Terms of Reference and Membership.

SEPG will make a decision on whether the proposal should proceed to further development.

Step 2 - High level due diligence and partnership lifecycle

Once SEPG approval is given to proceed Stage 2 has two parts.

The Education Partnerships team will complete a high-level due diligence report on the proposed partner, which can mostly be undertaken independently but may require information from the partner and/or the academic proposer.  A recommendation at this stage will be made on whether an independent site visit is required.

The second part is the completion of the partnership lifecycle which will outline how the arrangement will work in practice and evidence how the process aligns to the Framework for PGR Education Partnerships.

Step 3 - Approval

Postgraduate Research Sub-Committee (PRGSC) has responsibility for the approval of PGR education partnership arrangements.

The high-level due diligence form and the partnership lifecycle document will be considered at a meeting of the committee for approval based on the following criteria:

  • The partner is legally, academically and financially sound.
  • The partner has the appropriate experience and resources to provide a high-quality student experience.
  • The arrangement meets the expectations of the Framework for PGR Education Partnerships.

PGRSC will make a recommendation to University Education Committee on whether to approve the partnership.

Step 4 - Legal Agreement

Following UEC approval normally a university level framework arrangement is put in place and individual student agreements will be established that provide detail of their supervision arrangements.
