The formative assessment - not as scary as it sounds, we promise!

Further details on your formative assessment will be explained to you by academic teaching staff during the week, but you can see basic assignment details in your subject strand section above.

Formative means that it's not graded or marked, and is purely for you to receive constructive feedback. We just want you to try your best and give it a go!

You can only fail the assessment if you do not submit everything required or it's clear that you haven't put any effort into it.

You're not expected to do work on this or revise in advance of attending PASS - everything you need for the assignments will be taught in the week.

It's important to know what, how and when to submit, so if you're unsure of anything, you must speak with your subject strand leader as soon as possible.

If you're experiencing personal circumstances that affect your ability to complete or submit any assignments by the deadline, we may be able to put alternative arrangements or alternative deadlines in place. Please let us know in advance of the deadline.

Read or Formative Assessment Policy for further details.

FAQs

Can I change subject strand or do different in-person and online days?

You can't change your subject strand - this has been allocated to you based on your firm choice course. The Summer school is designed to prepare you for your undergraduate degree, so your subject strand is in line with this.

What is the difference between live and asynchronous sessions?

Live sessions take place via Zoom or Teams and you will need to join the virtual call in order to take part in the session. You can find the links to all of your live sessions via your course page in Canvas.

Asynchronous sessions are where you work through content in your own time - this might involve additional reading, tasks & quizzes, pre-recorded lectures, or watching videos. Whilst they are not live, it's important to do these sessions when timetabled, so that you are prepared for your next live session.

Find out more on our online support page

Which parts are compulsory?
  • compulsory timetabled sessions, in person and online between Sunday 28 June and Friday 3 July.
These are highlighted in light blue on your timetable.
  • all tasks and assignments
  • the HE skills module
  • the careers and employability module
    • including one live Ask the Experts webinar. If you are on the Medicine subject strand, you do not need to attend an ask the experts session
  • complete the PASS evaluation form by 17 July - this will be sent to you on 10 July
Which parts are optional?

Optional activities are anything highlighted in navy on your timetable including:

  • evening social activities
  • academic office hours
  • wellbeing drop-in sessions
  • the LinkedIn task (part of the careers and employability module)
Where should I go on my first day?

Closer to PASS, you will receive a final timetable which includes building and room locations for all of your in-person sessions.

Registration on your first in-person day will take place in the Lindisfarne Room, Hadrian building (No.4 on the Campus Map). See maps and directions.

There will be plenty of staff on campus to help you find where you need to go, so don't worry about getting lost!

Do I have to go to the social activities?

The evening social activities are completely optional, so there is no pressure to attend.

We do recommend joining at least one. There’s a range available, from energetic to more relaxed, and they’re a great way to experience student life at Newcastle and meet like-minded people.

If you’d prefer not to attend, you’re very welcome to spend time in the accommodation and socialise there instead, or explore the city.
