New exhibition explores ideas of home and belonging

A new exhibition involving landscape architecture colleagues is part of the Moomin 80th Anniversary celebrations.

11 June 2025

To Own Both Nothing and the Whole World reflects on the impact of displacement and the interconnected journeys of people, plants and place. The exhibition is supported by Moomin Characters Ltd and is part of celebrations marking 80 years since the first Moomin story was published. The stories by Tove Jansson describe adventure, journeys and the search to find home.

The exhibition is led by artist and Landscape lecturer, Henna Asikainen, together with writer and architect Roua Horanieh. Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture, Dr Usue Ruiz Arana, also contributed through the creation of two sound pieces that accompany the exhibition. The main sound piece interlaces the inner sounds of two cherry trees, a focus group of participants’ favourite nature sounds and a dawn chorus that will immerse visitors in the landscape of Howick Hall in Alnwick. This work draws from her ontopoetic listening practice that aims to foster regenerative worldviews.

To Own Both Nothing and the Whole World is open from Wednesday 11 June – Sunday 6 July at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. Entry to Baltic is free and it is open from 10am – 6pm, Wednesday – Sunday.
