Project Title

Local Communities Engagement in Heritage Conservation and Management in Egypt

Project Description

While people centred approaches to heritage conservation and management developed and are advocated in western societies, it is crucial to understand the possibility of their implementation and its limitation in non-western contexts. Following case studies research, the research looks to investigate local communities understanding  and relation to heritage while understanding experts role in shaping local communities’ perception of heritage and the interactions between both entities in the context of Egypt. Using qualitative approaches, interviews are conducted with professionals in the field or working directly with the local communities in two neighbourhoods in Cairo: Al Khalifa and Al Darb Al Ahmar and with locals from these areas and observations are undertaken during fieldwork to understand people’s daily interactions with their contexts.
