About Carl's career

Since graduating, what have you gone on to do?
Since graduating, I have had three roles prior to my current role at ScS. Firstly, fresh from graduation I worked as a sales advisor for Chrome PSG, who are a franchise store for EE. This role certainly built up my confidence and gave me some valuable sales experience. Following this, I had a very short period at Home Fundraising where I was a fundraiser. This included knocking on doors across the North East trying to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. This role was very character building and I received a lot of doors slammed in my face. But like my previous role, this role helped build my confidence and communication skills. My third role was for Solarglide Limited as a Sales and Marketing Coordinator. This role included speaking with customers trying to get sales, placing customers’ orders with our suppliers, and sending the goods by courier to the customer. I also ran the social media pages for the company as well as all looking after other agencies we dealt with. After working in this role for over a year, I realised I wanted a career within marketing. Then came ScS.

At ScS I have grown my skillset dramatically and I really enjoy what I do. Currently I am the video presenter for Social Media, so I get to film, star in, edit and publish the videos across social media. I also film ScS sales people for Facebook live videos. Other duties include: posting organic content across all social media platforms, editing web content such as product and page descriptions, managing the relationship with our video agency, conducting competitor analysis, managing Taboola content and campaigns, and creating any other content that is needed for ScS. I'm really excited about my role here at ScS and I am looking forward to developing my skillset further, and establishing myself within the company and the marketing world.

Is the above what you planned to do before starting university?
Before I started University, I was never 100% sure on what I wanted to do, but I always had an idea that I wanted to end up in marketing, and especially within the creative side. I think where I am at now definitely allows me to put my creative mindset into practice!

About Carl's Newcastle experience

What was your favourite thing about your course?
I really enjoyed the fact that my course combined marketing with management, giving me knowledge of people as well setting me up for hopefully one day, a management role within the sector.

What extra-curricular activities or societies were you involved with during your time here?
I was a part of the Management Society Football Team (ManSoc). I really enjoy playing football and the team was full of great guys who I still stay in touch with!

About the future

How do you see future technologies or new ways of working (future of work) affecting your sector?
With the rise of technology, everyone is glued to their smartphones, laptops etc. so within this sector, it is important to try and stand out as much as possible. Within social media especially, video content is already becoming massively important and I’m looking forward to creating a lot more content!

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
Hopefully as a full-time video presenter or editor. Doing this, I really get to put my creative thinking into practice and I really enjoy it!
