About Shirlie's career

Since graduating, what have you gone on to do?
Following graduation, I rejoined the company where I had completed my placement year, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. My first role involved assisting in the growth of the HP Software Education sales within EMEA in a pre-sales capacity. The focus was to learn and support HP Software tools/products with demonstrations, Proof of Concepts, proposal writing and pre-sales activities by conveying messages of prime importance. My second role, HPE Software Education Digital Sales for BeNeLux and Nordics, involved identifying key contacts within an organisation to generate new education business.

I then joined Micro Focus for seven months in the Client Principle, Software Services UK and Ireland department, providing support to the Account managers and setting direction for business development and solution replication.

I am now working for Dell Technologies as the Enterprise Account Manager, where I am responsible for my UK customers and work to add strategic and economic value to Dell Technologies, through building valued and long-term relationships in my account base.

Is the above what you planned to do before starting university?
I never intended to work in the IT industry before starting my placement year during my third year at University.

My favourite things that the course offered were the flexibility and relevant content.

Did you complete a placement year/study abroad/summer internship during your time at Newcastle?
Yes, I completed a placement year at Hewlett Packard in a Software Marketing role for the UK & Ireland. I supported industry Marketing Manager’s with planning, strategy and operations. My main responsibilities were to assist in the coordination and execution of marketing activities, campaigns and events as well as sales calling activities.

What extra-curricular activities or societies were you involved with during your time here?
During my time at Newcastle University I was involved in various societies. The two that I was most engaged with were Dance and Business. I was on the committee for the Dance Society in second year looking after Media and Publicity. As a final year student I was part of the Business Society running various entrepreneurial events and marketing initiatives around campus.

About the future

How do you see future technologies and new ways of working (future of work) affecting your sector?
Most of our customers are under-going a huge number of transformational projects. One of which is workforce transformation, giving employees and their workforce flexibility on where they work, when they work and how they work. Technology is influencing on the demands of the modern-day workforce and the average human attention span is less than eight seconds, not to mention more than 60% of the current-day workforce want to work anywhere and anytime. Companies have to respond to this change and keep up with the changing landscape.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
I would like to continue my Sales career in the IT industry until I get promoted into a Executive role. After which I would like the chance to manage a team, either from a strategic management or development perspective.
