Internship info

This is a unique opportunity to gain first hand business consulting experience with a respected and innovative 90-year-old UK company. Understand why it’s important for manufacturers to recruit business minds, gain an insight into the world of business in science and work in a global team with students from Groningen, Xiamen and Boston Universities.

Thomas Swan is a 4th generation family owned and run company, built on traditional family values - including integrity, respect and teamwork. Based in Consett, County Durham they are a leading manufacturer of performance and fine chemicals and a world leader in the manufacture and sale of graphene and other emerging 2D products. Manufacturing over 100 products, from kilogram to multi tonne quantities, they have offices in the USA and China and a global network of distributors. Thomas Swan exports to over 80 countries worldwide and is well placed to service British and international markets.

You will be working with the ‘Advanced Materials’ team who are a new branch of the company. They work with exciting and innovative materials and are involved with nanotechnology. This branch will be working to a different business model targeting new markets and new customers. Your focus will be on developing an overall global digital marketing strategy and plan incorporating recommendations on what to do differently and actions to drive implementation. A key feature will be to review what changes and technology can be used to improve their website and internet presence.

Thomas Swan is based in Consett and students would be based here 4 days per week and the Business School for one day per week.

The internship will take place for a 4-6 week period between the end of June and August. Dates will be confirmed shortly.

The 2019 project will involve an effort for you to implement a digital marketing programme. Last year’s students were given a project that involved looking at Thomas Swan’s five year growth strategy. Students focused on expanding their existing core market and developing new products. This meant assessing regulatory pressures that will affect the company’s future new business and new markets.

Last year the students prepared a report regarding their study and provided an hour long executive summary to deliver followed up by a question session from senior Thomas Swan personnel.

During this internship you will improve your analysis, research and communication skills. You will have an opportunity to present your strategic recommendations to a panel of Thomas Swan senior management, and will gain hands-on experience of what it is like to work in the commercial side of the chemical industry.
