Dr Robert Newbery leads entrepreneurship symposium in Azerbaijan

Dr Robert Newbery, senior lecturer in entrepreneurship, was keynote speaker at  symposium on Entrepreneurship for University Leaders, in Baku, Azerbaijan earlier this month.

The Symposium, organised by the British Council Azerbaijan together with the Institute of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan to bring together higher education leaders (rectors, vice-rectors, and deans) to discuss impact of higher education on the economic development of the country through developing and supporting entrepreneurship and innovation. During the second half of the day, practical skills in innovation management, strategies for establishing entrepreneurial universities as well as diverse models of funding of universities will be provided to the participants.

Dr Newbery, an experienced expert on Entrepreneurship, led the symposium on “Higher Education and Economic Development: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Financial Sustainability of Universities”.

This is Dr Newbery’s second visit to the country, during his first visit in June he discussed entrepreneurship and exporting with colleagues in this fascinating post-soviet country and was interview on national TV. In Azerbaijan the state reliance on oil has been undermined in recent years by the changing oil price and there is a growing realisation of the importance of entrepreneurial action for stimulating the economy and pursuing new opportunities. The event hopes to stimulate a new approach to developing enterprise education in Azerbaijan.
