ICE MSc international graduate co-founds business in the UK after receiving the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa

Douglas Jones Jr, a graduate of the Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (ICE) MSc course was sponsored by the School on a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa, enabling him to continue working in the UK, and co-found an event-led business.

Douglas, an international student from the USA, began his studies here at Newcastle in 2013 on the ICE programme. It was his dream to study abroad and he wanted to embark on a course in which he could develop his entrepreneurial skills.

As a course that is aimed at those seeking innovative, creative and entrepreneurial roles, it was a perfect fit for Douglas. Speaking about the course, he said “I joined the 2013 intake as a mature student and thoroughly enjoyed the ICE MSc course.  The calibre of teaching and course content was second-to-none and I was able to learn all about the theory of entrepreneurship whilst gaining practical, hands-on business experience.”

This hands-on experience was what allowed Douglas to co-found an events-led business upon graduating, ultimately securing him sponsorship of the Tier 1 visa by the Business School. This visa is given to international graduates with exceptional talent in entrepreneurship, giving Douglas the opportunity to work in the UK for an additional year.

This sponsorship was then continued by Tech North – an initiative working to accelerate the growth of the digital business sector in the North of England – where Douglas now works, using his entrepreneurial skills gained on the ICE programme to support digital start-ups in the region.

Douglas added, “I’d recommend Newcastle University Business School and the ICE MSc programme to any international students looking to study and then work in the UK.

“It’s hard work, requires diligence and the need to be very focused from the outset regarding the career path you’d like to follow when your course ends and what steps you’ll need to take to achieve your goals.  Support from the university is there for you, but you need to ensure you access it fully.”

Douglas’ accomplishments are a prime example of the great things that our master’s students can achieve, and we are delighted that our ICE programme, alongside the visa scheme has allowed Douglas to achieve his dream of becoming an entrepreneur.
