Leadership Series: Checking in with Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport

The Leadership Series provides you with insight and knowledge from business leaders around the world on an array of topical business issues.

It is a great opportunity for you to learn from those in leadership positions and network with our broader community.

In the latest instalment of the Leadership Series, which took place on Monday 03 December 2018, Newcastle University Business School were delighted to welcome back inspirational 1998 MBA graduate; Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport. Inspiring students, staff and local corporates, Stewart spoke about his success in business.

Before the Leadership Series, our Master’s students were also treated to an Operations Management Masterclass, where Stewart explored and shared the inner workings of Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the United Kingdom.

Those at the Leadership event also heard the successful CEO talk about the sustainability agenda and the future of work in the context of Aviation; how he tackles management of diverse stakeholders; and what qualities he looks for in a leader.

Encouraged and enthused by the Leadership Series event, student Ben Maxwell, third year Accounting and Finance graduate, said:

“Seeing Stewart deliver his Lecture on Leadership was insightful and inspiring in more ways than one. Not only is a CEO taking time out of his schedule to come up from Gatwick to Newcastle to deliver this lecture is an honour, but to see a returning alumnus still be so engaged with the University is a fantastic testament to the value that Newcastle provides.

“Some 20 years after graduation, Stewart still expressed the value in the degree he achieved and how it is still helping him every day on the fundamental activities of CEO – a great legacy!

“Thank you Stewart!”

Stewart ended the session with his personal advice on how to succeed in leadership and business; “Have an attitude of open-mindedness to always keep learning, be honest and reflect on your failures to grow.”
