Dr Sue Abbott

Senior Lecturer in Management


Dr Sue Abbott joined the Newcastle University Business School as Senior Lecturer in Management in September 2016.

Sue was made Chair of the Business School Equality/Diversity Committee 2016 -2017 and went on to work as part of the Athena Swan team up to successful submission period.

Prior to this Sue worked as a Senior Lecturer (Human Resource Management) at Northumbria University Business School from April 2005 where she was Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Business with HRM programme.

Previous workplace positions prior to joining academia included:

Senior HR consultant (Newcastle CIty Council) from 2003-2005  and Brigade Personnel and Equality officer (Tyne and Wear Fire Service) from 1993-2003. Sue also worked for a number of other organisations including Bristol City Council, Avon County Council, Blyth Valley Council and Northumberland County Council.

Qualifications: PhD;MA; FCIPD; FHEA;PCAPL.

Sue has specialised in equality and diversity in the workplace whilst also having expertise in management and human resource management. Her areas of interest have included  'lad culture' and in April 2015 Sue organised the first North East summit on this topic. As a result Sue was asked to speak at various events on this topic.Additionally Sue has presented at various academic conferences on topics such as women and trade unions and related gender areas such as harassment at work. Sue has also an interest in LGBT and race in the workplace topics. Most recently Sue has presented on the topic of the gender pay gap at various events.

Sue has taught  on various large undergraduate modules such as BUS1015 (Management and Organisation) and BUS 2019 (Understanding  Work and Organisations). Sue is Module Leader for  BUS 2000/2027/2028  which is an undergraduate Human Resource Management module. She also teaches Equality and Diversity on BUS 3006/NBS 8383 and supervises UG/PG Dissertations in this area.

Sue is a member of the Show Racism the Red Card Management committee which involves promoting anti racist education to young people via the football industry.





Sue undertakes research in the area of women and trade unions as well as general equality/diversity areas such as the gender pay gap.
