Dr Yipeng Liu

Reader in International Management and Organisation Studies


Dr. Liu is Reader in International Management and Organisation Studies at Newcastle University Business School, UK. Previously, he worked as Associate Professor and Director of Research at Department of Entrepreneurship and Local Economy, Birmingham University Business School, UK. Dr. Liu obtained a doctorate (magna cum laude) in management from Mannheim University, Germany. His research has been sponsored by British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, Sino-British Fellowship Trust, DAAD in Germany, among others.

His research interests centre on the emerging market multinationals and international entrepreneurship from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective by embracing the notion of “West-Meets-East”. Dr. Liu actively contributes to the academic community by serving as keynote speakers and track/session chairs in international academic conferences, such as Academy of Management, European Academy of Management, and British Academy of Management. He has served as Guest Editor for Special Issues at leading management and organization journals, including Journal of Organizational Behavior. He is an Associate Editor of Asian Business & Management, and currently serves on the editorial review board of five international journals, including Journal of Management Studies.

Dr. Liu has gathered broad professional experience in the business world such as management consulting, venture capital, business development and engineering in Asia, North America and Europe before moving to the academic world. He worked for clients, such as Bosch, Heidelberg Druckmaschinen, Fresenius, Siemens, Allianz, and Deutsche Telekom.

Research statement

My research interests center on the emerging market multinationals and international entrepreneurship from a cross-cultural and comparative perspective by embracing the notion of “West-Meets-East”. I believe that exploring the social mechanisms and illuminating the multi-faceted human side factors of micro-foundations in an international context can advance international management and organization studies in important ways. A nuanced and micro-level understanding of individuals, their behaviors and social interactions in international organizations is instrumental for explaining processes and macro-level outcomes and thereby important for scholars, managers and policymakers to tackle societal and economic grand challenges facing the global economy today. My engaged scholarship research projects cover the areas of emerging market multinationals’ global strategy, international entrepreneurship and global talent mobility, risk and resilience, behavioral micro-foundations of sustainability, and healthcare management in China from a cross-cultural comparative perspective.

My three research streams include:

  • international management and emerging market multinationals, especially Chinese overseas acquisitions, China's globalizing endeavours (individuals and organizations) and Chinese indigenous leadership;

  • international entrepreneurship, including returnee entrepreneurship, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, global talent mobility, regional entrepreneurship and institutional change;

  • micro-foundations of management and organization studies, e.g. collaborative partnerships, ambidexterity, risk, resilience, sustainability, and strategic agility.

  • Co-organizer, course designer and instructor of a 5-day EDEN Doctoral Seminar on International Mergers and Acquisitions for PhD students and early career researchers at EIASM, Brussels, Belgium
