Mathematics and statistics preparation course

As part of induction, those who join our Economics postgraduate programmes will be required to undertake a preparation course in mathematics and statistics to support their transition onto the programmes. This will be alongside our week-long postgraduate induction schedule.

There is no preparation required prior to taking part and you can find out more details about the preparation course below.

The benefits of undertaking the preparation course:

  • by covering mathematics and statistics comprehensively and employing a hands-on, problem-solving approach, you will be prepared for the core topics in our economics programmes
  • you will be equipped with the essential mathematical and statistical skills required to excel in various economics courses. By participating in this intensive course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts, fostering a solid foundation for your academic journey
  • you will develop the skills and confidence necessary to engage with complex economic models, analyse data, and make informed decisions based on statistical and mathematical insights

Active participation is encouraged during these sessions, to help you to develop skills and deepen your understanding of mathematics and statistics.

You will be expected to take notes during these sessions to reinforce your learning and refer back to them when needed, therefore pen and paper is recommended.

What does the preparation course include?

The course adopts a highly interactive approach to learning and teaching, drawing upon the principles of active learning theory. You will actively participate in the learning process through various engaging activities and discussions.

You will have the opportunity to work both individually and in small learning groups, to foster the exchange of ideas, discussions, and improved learning from different perspectives.

There will be no self-directed study or homework required in addition to the sessions listed above.

There will be further sessions week commencing the 22 September, but these are listed on your academic timetable.
