Student Success for Third Year Running at Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge 2025

Newcastle University Business School continued their outstanding achievements at this year’s Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge (BGTC), with one student team ranking 18th globally.

27 November 2025

The competition bridges theory and practice, and enables students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world trading environment using Bloomberg terminals. This year, Newcastle University was represented through 23 teams with 87 student participants from across different schools and disciplines.

Outstanding results

Thanks to the University’s strong support and ongoing guidance, the project delivered positive results. Dr Jose Liu, BGTC Academic Lead, Senior Lecturer in Finance was the lead for the competition and coordinated the School’s participation in the Challenge to enrich students’ practical learning experience. Alongside dedicated support from Dr Liu, all participants received guidance from the Business School’s Finance Subject Group and School Postgraduate Research Assistants Mengya Wu and Congjing Song.

The top-performing team from the Business School was MAR who ranked 18th globally, 3rd in Europe, and 3rd in the UK, out of 2393 teams worldwide. The team consisted of:

  • Dr Liu
  • Riley Sprague, Accounting, Finance and Strategic Investment MSc student and AR team captain
  • Monica Jaya Thrisha Balamurugan, Accounting, Finance and Strategic Investment MSc student
  • Alfie Carberry, Economics BSc student

Two additional Business School teams, Futsal Nassr Trading LTD and Super Star, placed within the top 10% globally, demonstrating the strength of the students and the value of this initiative in enhancing employability and practical skills.

Turning theory into practice

Dr Liu said: "This year's Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge showcased not only our students’ technical skills, but their ability to think critically and perform under real market conditions. Ranking 18th globally and securing 3rd positions in Europe and the UK is a testament to their hard work and our School's commitment to experiential learning. It’s been a privilege to lead this initiative again and witness our students transform classroom theory into strategic execution with global impact."

Riley Sprague said of the opportunity: “We focused on capturing volatility surrounding earnings releases and sector-specific news to maximise profit potential. The competition offered a high-stakes, real-world setting within a fast-paced environment, and its design aligned closely with concepts covered across our academic courses.”
