Research abstract

Reshoring - relocating business operations back to the home country - has gained momentum amid rising global protectionism, trade tensions and energy crises. Despite its growing relevance, research on the implications of reshoring for firms’ Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance is scarce.

This study investigates the relationship between reshoring and ESG outcomes through a mixed-method approach. We first conducted a qualitative study with top executives who lead the reshoring strategy of their firms. Then, we analysed objective data from 304 firms between 2013 and 2024 to assess the empirical effects of reshoring on ESG performance and the moderating role of firm age.

Our findings reveal that reshoring has distinct effects across the three ESG pillars. We contribute to stakeholder and legitimacy theories by uncovering key mechanisms that link reshoring with ESG performance. Our study also informs managers about the practical implications of a reshoring strategy on ESG objectives.
