Ellie’s Study Abroad Experience in Spain

Economics BSc student Ellie reflects on how her year studying abroad in Spain helped her build confidence, independence and resilience, while experiencing life in Barcelona as a local student.

Q&A

Tell us about your study abroad experience – where was it and what did you study?

I studied abroad in Barcelona at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF).

At Newcastle I study economics, but at UPF I could study any module from their business school. I had the opportunity to study modules in finance, marketing, business psychology, and European studies.

I also took Spanish classes, obtaining my A1 and A2 certificates.

What key skills did you develop while studying abroad?

One of the biggest personal impacts for me is the confidence and independence gained from moving to a new country alone and building a life there. Navigating day-to-day in an unfamiliar environment taught me resilience and problem-solving skills.

On the academic side of things, there was a big focus on group-based teaching. This pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped to develop my public speaking and collaboration skills. I found these especially valuable when working with students from all over the world.

How did you engage with student life in Barcelona?

I signed up to UPF's buddy programme, where I was allocated a local student as a buddy. We connected over summer, and then when I arrived in Barcelona we met up frequently. We became friends quickly and they gave me a local's perspective of student life.

I also attended Erasmus Student Network (ESN) events, such as icebreaking games in the park and the international dinner, where I met loads of other international and local students.

I signed up to take Spanish classes too, alongside my regular university lectures, which was another great way to meet people.

What was your favourite thing about studying abroad?

My favourite thing about studying abroad was the experiences I had. Seeing the city through the eyes of a resident, rather than a tourist, gave me a whole new perspective. Every day I was excited to experience everything that Barcelona had to offer and truly make the most of my time there.

A year abroad truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and the memories I made will stay with me for life.
