Q&A

Tell us about your placement experience.

I completed my placement at Siemens Energy, based at their head office in Newcastle, where I worked as a Project Manager within the Sales team. This customer-focused role involved managing key initiatives to support both internal operations and client engagement.

One of my main responsibilities was contributing to the development of sales enablement tools, such as pricing matrices and market research, to support strategic decision-making. I also created a range of resources, both internal and customer-facing, to clearly communicate our product portfolio and service capabilities.

Tell us about your favourite thing about your placement.

My favourite part of the placement was the opportunities for development. For example, the emphasis Siemens Energy placed on supporting early career employees. I especially appreciated the opportunities for development and the investment in our growth. One highlight was an early careers trip, which allowed us to build key skills and gain valuable insights essential to our professional development.

This was further demonstrated through the opportunity I had to attend events across the UK, where I represented Siemens Energy and engaged directly with customers and potential clients. Being trusted to promote the company at external events was a significant responsibility and a clear reflection of the confidence my team had in me.

Attending these events gave me valuable exposure to the world of sales and business development. I gained firsthand insight into how customer relationships are built and maintained, how solutions are tailored to meet client needs, and how the company positions itself in a competitive market. It also allowed me to network with professionals from a wide range of industries, deepening my understanding of the energy sector and broadening my commercial awareness.

What was the office culture like?

The office culture at Siemens Energy was one of the standout aspects of my placement experience. From the moment I joined, it was clear that the company was investing heavily in creating an engaging, inclusive, and supportive workplace environment. There was a strong focus on employee wellbeing and morale, which significantly contributed to a positive and collaborative atmosphere.

Have your future plans changed as a result of doing a placement?

This placement has significantly enhanced my understanding of the various roles that exist within a business and how they interconnect. I initially chose a role in sales because I wanted to explore the customer-facing side of marketing and gain experience in relationship-building and strategic communication. While I found the experience highly rewarding and developed many transferable skills, it also helped me reflect on where my true interests lie.
