Q&A

Tell us about your placement experience.

For my placement year, I had the role of Commercial Industrial Placement Student, within the Unite Students head office, meaning I moved across the country to Bristol!

My role had a three-month rotation, allowing me to try out 4 aspects of the commercial department and see which areas were my favourites. I worked across the Marketing, Branding, Business Development and Commercial Performance teams.

What do you wish you had known before you started work?

Be yourself! They knew I was a student and might not have learnt everything so they were not expecting me to. It's a lot easier to go in and ask questions than to pretend you know it all when you don't. They want you for you, and if they don't, you probably wouldn't enjoy working in an environment like that anyway!

Tell us about your favourite project or task on placement

I was given a videography brief with full creative freedom, which meant I got to plan, direct, produce and edit a interview style video with all of my cohort of placement students, out early careers team and managers to showcase the process of getting a placement and how we impact the teams we work with.

Have your future plans changed as a result of doing a placement?

Yes! Initially I went into my placement year thinking I would like to be a social media marketer as a future career, but now I realise that, as much fun as it is, I really love the creative process of a brand team, where I can produce videos or graphics based on design briefs and see them come to life.
