Husnain Sherazi is an experienced researcher and academician, with over 12 years of teaching & cutting-edge research experience in Computer Science and self-sustained IoT systems, currently serving as Director of Student Recruitment, Director of Business, Innovation, and Skills (Interim), Employability Lead for Computing, and Associate Professor at the School of Computing, Newcastle University, UK. He is a member of Networked and Ubiquitous Systems Engineering Group at Newcastle which is home to the prestigious National EdgeAI Hub, UK.
As Director of Student Recruitment, Business, Innovation, and Skills, Husnain leads the strategic planning and forecasting of student enrolments across undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research at Computing. As a key member of the School Executive Board (SEB), he contributes to shaping the school’s strategic direction and operational priorities. He oversees national and international recruitment initiatives, including open days, offer-holder experience events, and outreach activities, ensuring effective resource allocation and impactful engagement with prospective students. Husnain plays a key role in engaging employers to enhance graduate employability by inviting them to sponsor events, deliver guest talks, and support industrial dissertations addressing real-world challenges. His efforts foster strong partnerships between the school and industry, creating valuable opportunities for students to gain practical insights and experience. Husnain is also actively involved in external engagement activities, focusing on careers, employability, and internationalisation. He collaborates with employers, alumni, and global partners to strengthen the school’s reputation and ensure its graduates are well-prepared for competitive job markets both locally and internationally. By aligning academic excellence with industry needs, he contributes to the school’s strategic goals and its standing within the Russell Group.
Husnain was previously a Senior Lecturer and Program Director for B.Sc. IT Management for Business (ITMB) at the School of Computing and Engineering, University of West London, London, UK. He was a Researcher at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland from Sep. 2020 to May 2021. He has also served as an Assistant Professor at GIFT University and Adjunct Professor at Superior University, Pakistan during the Spring 2020. Husnain earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Politecnico di Bari, Italy on the Ministerial Fellowship in 2018 where he also served as a Postdoctoral Researcher from Nov. 2018 to Oct. 2019. He has been on a research exchange at the University of Glasgow, UK from May 2017 to Jan. 2018.
During his professional career spanned across different countries, Husnain has been a part of renowned research projects, acquired research grants, supervised research dissertations, developed programs, and contributed to the design & delivery of a range of modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has previously served on a number of senior administrative roles in academia including Director of Student Outreach, Program Director for B.Sc. ITMB, Lead on Research and Knowledge Exchange, and Head of Intelligent Systems and Industrial Automation research group, to name a few. Over 70 articles in top-tier journals and conferences are on his credit. He is serving as Associate Editor (Ad Hoc Networks), Executive Editor (Internet Technology Letter), Topic Editor (Electronics), and Guest Editor for several prestigious journals. Husnain regularly chairs sessions and serves on the Technical Program Committee for world's renowned conferences including IEEE ICC, IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE VTC, and IEEE EDUCON. Moreover, he is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), Senior Member IEEE, Member ACM, IEEE Young Professionals, IEEE Communications Society, British Computing Society, and the IET.
Husnain’s research focuses on creating intelligent and energy-efficient communication systems for the connected world. His work covers the Internet of Things (IoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), drones, industrial automation, edge and quantum computing, and blockchain-based trust systems. As part of the National Edge AI Hub, his research explores how edge intelligence can make future networks more adaptive, sustainable, and data-driven. Over the past decade, he has worked across Europe and the UK on several major research programmes, including Horizon 2020, SymbIoT, and E-Shelf, and has been a part of multiple UKRI and EPSRC-funded projects. He was among the early researchers to explore low-power wide-area network standards such as LoRaWAN, helping design industrial-scale devices and gateways that enable greener and more reliable connectivity. His work aims to make communication networks more sustainable, intelligent, and responsive through AI-driven optimisation and data-aware decision-making.
His work bridges the gap between technology and society, translating research into real-world impact that contributes to global sustainability goals. He has led and contributed to projects that apply digital innovation to improve urban living, environmental resilience, and public safety. Notably, his collaboration with city councils on the Internet of Trees framework uses IoT sensors to monitor and preserve urban trees and green spaces, helping horticulture teams respond quickly to environmental risks and hazards. More broadly, his research promotes the responsible use of smart technologies to support cleaner cities, safer transport networks, and more energy-efficient industrial systems. His work contributes directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable cities, climate action, and responsible innovation.
Husnain has extensive experience supervising and mentoring researchers at all levels. He has supervised more than 150 undergraduate projects, 40 master’s dissertations, and eight PhD students, with several of his students now working in leading universities and technology organisations. He has also enjoyed mentoring postdoctoral researchers and early-career academics. His full list of publications is available on his Google Scholar profile. Prospective PhD and postdoctoral researchers who are passionate about intelligent and sustainable communication technologies are encouraged to get in touch to explore collaboration opportunities.
He has designed and delivered a number of modules including, but not limited to the following:
