Hosted by Dr Martin Farr, Co-Chair of the Public Lectures Committee

Levelling up was a longstanding challenge for Britain before Covid-19, but the pandemic has now made it both more acute and urgent to address. Yet achieving equality of opportunity is more than simply a social imperative. This lecture will set out how levelling up is also an economic and political necessity and how this presents a chance to fundamentally redefine the UK, not only to ourselves, but also to a wider world.

Biography:

A long-time campaigner for equality of opportunity, Rt Hon Justine Greening is the founder of the Social Mobility Pledge campaign and the Levelling Up Goals architecture, through which she is working with leaders across the private and public sectors, including universities to develop levelling up strategies that deliver change on the ground for communities. Between 2011 and 2018, Justine served as a UK Cabinet Minister, as Secretary of State for Education, International Development and Transport and prior to that from 2010-11 as Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
