History

In 2011, we celebrated our centenary.

Our programme of celebratory events included a public lecture by graduate Kate Adie, a multi-lingual theatrical production, the Modern Languages Ball and several conferences. Read an account of the past 100 Years of Modern Languages (PDF: 77KB) at Newcastle.

From 1996 to 2001, we published what was probably one of the world's first online academic journals, the Web Journal of Modern Language Linguistics.

Most of the contents of the journal are available on its website here. Thousands of academic journals are now available in print and online, or exclusively online, but in SML we have always liked to think of ourselves as trailblazers!
