Research on East Asia at Newcastle University is diverse, but the majority of work adopts a specific focus on contemporary Chinese and Japanese culture and society.

Housed within the School of Modern Languages, the Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA) is the world’s largest publicly accessible archive of independent Chinese cinema. This archive serves as a unique resource for teaching and research in Chinese Studies at Newcastle University.
