Translating & Interpreting MA (Chinese and English), Class of 2020
Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating
I enrolled in the MA programme in 2018, after working in Beijing as an overseas Social Media Marketing Manager. After graduating, I co-founded a subtitling studio with a fellow coursemate. We worked with freelance translators worldwide, providing services for Chinese streaming platforms.
Alongside managing the studio, I also freelanced in marketing translation. During this time, I translated two books, both of which have since been published. After two years of freelancing and studio work, I discovered a passion for research. I am now in the third year of my PhD.
I continue to freelance in subtitling for streaming platforms, alongside my doctoral studies.
Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?
Newcastle University has an excellent reputation among language enthusiasts in China. It is well known for having one of the best translation and interpreting programmes.
The teaching facilities are outstanding and the course content is diverse and comprehensive. Friends who had studied at Newcastle also spoke highly of the supportive staff and the welcoming atmosphere on campus.
How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?
The course prepared me very well for my career, as it offered a strong focus on practical training. Weekly translation assignments, mock conferences and internship opportunities with the UN and EU helped us gain a sense of real-world work.
Modules on professionalism and industry-led workshops helped us build connections within the field. It was great to be able to learn directly from experienced practitioners.
What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?
The strong sense of community and the supportive environment created by both peers and faculty. The lecturers were not only knowledgeable but also encouraging and approachable. I felt they genuinely cared about our progress and well being.
