Translating & Interpreting MA (Chinese and English), Class of 2022
Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?
Newcastle University has a strong reputation in Translating and Interpreting. The School of Modern Languages has two fully equipped classrooms, specifically designed for simultaneous interpreting, each with more than 10 booths.
Compared to other universities, the facilities and resources are truly top-notch. On top of that, my two-year programme not only gave me a solid academic foundation, but also allowed me to spend more time in Newcastle. This allowed me to learn more about the local culture and helped me really feel at home in the city.
How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?
My course offered intensive training in both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. Our professors regularly organised mock conferences, giving us a chance to gain hands-on experience and simulate real interpreting scenarios. These sessions really helped me build confidence and develop practical skills.
I didn’t leave Newcastle just as a fresh graduate — I left as a professional translator and interpreter.
What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?
The friendships. I met so many amazing people during my time at Newcastle and was lucky to become close friends with many of them. We spent hours practicing interpreting together in the booths and had lots of fun exploring different parts of the city.
Describe your time at Newcastle in three words
Transformative. Fulfilling. Unforgettable.
