Meet Yu-Chi (Donna)

Translating & Interpreting MA (Chinese and English), Class of 2024

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

I graduated from Newcastle University in 2024 with a Master’s degree in Interpreting. I'm currently based in Newcastle, working as a freelance interpreter. My work takes place primarily in medical and social service settings.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

My undergraduate major was English Literature and Education. However, I have always wanted a career that applies language more practically. I also wanted to support individuals with limited access to their rights. This led me to study Public Service Interpreting.

The T&I programme at Newcastle stood out to me because of its experienced professors and practitioner-led teaching. The course offers a diverse and well-structured curriculum. The dedication of the teaching staff was also a decisive factor in my decision to study here.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

I took modules including Consecutive Interpreting, Simultaneous Interpreting and Public Service Interpreting. These modules built a solid foundation for my interpreting skills. They also gave me the ability to handle a variety of professional settings, which is essential in my freelance career.

The lecturers have continued to offer support after graduation, helping me navigate challenges.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

Newcastle University offers a wealth of valuable resources. I particularly enjoyed the physical facilities, such as the sports centre and interpreting booths.

Beyond that, the support from both lecturers and peers created a sense of community. Discussing shared passions with like-minded classmates made my time here meaningful and memorable.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Supportive. Rewarding. Connecting.
