Meet Anna

Modern Languages BA (French and Spanish), Class of 2023

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

I’m Anna and I studied Modern Languages (French & Spanish) at Newcastle. Straight after graduating, I moved to Colombia to teach English as part of the British Council Language Assistant.

I am now studying for a Masters in Migration & Intercultural Studies with the hope of working for the United Nations in the department of the International Organisation for Migration.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I liked that you could study three languages, so I studied beginners' Portuguese in first and second year. I also loved the campus and language building, such as the Language Resource Centre.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

My year abroad made me realise how much I wanted to move about and meet people from different cultures.

I felt that the oral presentation modules prepared me well for presenting presentations to large audiences in the future. I also appreciated the option to do the Careers Development Module.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

At Newcastle, I had the opportunity to get involved in the third sector, which prepared me for my future career. For example, I was involved with the charity NEST and the charity COCO, as well as being welfare officer for the Amnesty society.

I also loved the campus and the libraries, as well as access to both the seaside and a vibrant town centre. I also enjoyed the Modern Languages Society and the events and the trips which it offered.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Eye-opening, enjoyable, fun.
