Meet Georgina

Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies BA (Spanish and Portuguese), Class of 2022

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

After graduating from my M.Litt, I began working on a Home Office contract that helped refugees across the North East with housing issues, finding employment, improving their English and integrating into their communities.

I mainly worked with Spanish and Portuguese speakers, but also became familiar with translation services and software.

I have now started working at a trade union as a local organiser, where I’ll be facilitating public service workers to take action to improve their conditions.

Since graduating, I have also participated in conferences where I have presented my M.Litt research. I have also recently contributed to a publication with Linguapax.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I chose to study at Newcastle University because of the friendliness of the teaching staff and facilities like the Language Resource Centre.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

My undergraduate degree gave me the ability to communicate with service users and make a real difference to their lives. It also gave me the ability to understand and adapt to varied cultures to tailor the support I could offer.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

Newcastle University was a great place to study languages because of the staff's expertise and range of specialisations. I enjoyed being challenged by modules which taught me completely new topics and opened up the path for me to explore my own research interests.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Fun. Challenging. Rewarding.
