Meet Laura

Modern Languages BA (French, German, and Spanish with Dutch and Catalan), Class of 2015

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

After graduating from Newcastle in 2015, I headed to Cologne with a DAAD scholarship for a two-year full-time MA programme in specialised translation. With my MA in my pocket, I worked close to four years as an in-house translator, moving into translation project management in 2021. I currently work for a boutique LSP (language service provider) as a project manager.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

I must admit, I chose Newcastle primarily for the location (I am from the area), but the facilities and atmosphere did win me over compared to other local universities.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

The language teaching was incredibly engaging with a practical focus, which motivated me to hone my skills.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

Getting to learn so many languages! I was able to take French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Catalan. I even took evening classes in Bengali.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Engaging, fun, formative.
