Meet Niall

Modern Languages BA (French, Spanish and Portuguese), Class of 2014

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

I studied French, Spanish and Portuguese at Newcastle University from 2010 to 2014. I then stayed in Newcastle for a couple of years, working in finance, before moving to Leeds to study for an MA in Translation and Interpreting.

Upon obtaining my postgraduate degree, I accepted an internship in the Verbatim Reporting Service at UN Headquarters in New York. I subsequently accepted a freelance contract, dividing my time between New York and the UK.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I accepted an in-house position as a translator at RWS. In 2022, I accepted a post as an in-house translator at FIFA and relocated to Zurich.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

The university's reputation appealed to me. The city itself and the course structure were also major factors in my decision to study at Newcastle.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

The course provided a pivotal stepping stone and became the bedrock of my future career as a translator.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

It was an enriching experience, not just academically, but in other aspects of personal and professional growth as well. I cherished the camaraderie, forged meaningful relationships with classmates and tutors, and gained invaluable life skills that extended outside the campus.

The extra-curricular opportunities broadened my horizons, while the underlying ethos of real-world experience grounded my learning.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Transformative, exhilarating, immersive.
