Meet Rachael

Modern Languages BA (Chinese and French), Class of 2012

Introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you've done since graduating

Originally from West Yorkshire, I've been living in China for the past 11 years since graduating. I spent several years in Shanghai until 2018, but then moved to Kunming, Yunnan. This was in order to escape the impact of COVID and provide my kids with a childhood surrounded by nature.

My career in marketing began in 2013. Notable highlights include being a founding member of Sixth Tone, an award-winning media site that covers Chinese news for Western audiences. Also, working at Pear Video, where I developed my own social media video project from the ground up.

Since moving to Yunnan, I've shifted to freelance work as a translator, proofreader, copywriter and video editor. This change allows me to have a more flexible schedule, enabling me to spend more time in the great outdoors with my two children.

Why did you choose to study at Newcastle University?

It consistently ranks among the top 130 universities globally! Plus, the city itself is both student-friendly and affordable.

Additionally, I was drawn to the university's scheme for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This scheme offers the opportunity to receive a lower offer on successful completion of a summer school, making higher education more accessible.

How do you think your course prepared you for your chosen career?

My language course provided me with valuable transferable skills that I use in my marketing career. It enhanced my communication abilities, critical thinking, and cultural awareness – all of which are essential in marketing.

The course also honed my analytical and writing skills, helping me create tailored content and clear messaging.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Newcastle University?

I loved the vibrancy and the friendly atmosphere. There was always something going on around campus or in the city and everything was geared towards students. It was a joy to live there!

I also loved my teachers and lecturers. I still keep in touch with some of them now, 13 years later! They were kind, supportive and, above all, knowledgeable. Their amazing personalities and interesting lecture topics made me actually WANT to turn up every day.

Describe your time at Newcastle University in three words

Memorable, stimulating, transformative.
