Space, Sound and Architecture
How does sound enter architectural design – what problems does it present, and to what extent are those problems tied to broader issues in contemporary architectural theory and practice? This talk explores these issues, arguing that the tendency, outside of specialist areas of design, to treat sound in limited and secondary fashion reflects a more general problem concerning the emphasis on particular spatial forms in design practice.
Biography
Jeff Malpas is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Tasmania in Hobart and Honorary Professor at Australian Catholic University and University of Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities and a Distinguished Fellow and Vice-President of the Australian Association of von Humboldt Fellows. Originally trained in philosophy and history at the Australian National University and the University of Auckland, his work has expanded over the last forty years to engage with a wide range of topics and disciplines, including not only architecture, but also visual art, geography, literature, medicine, music, politics, sociology, and urban planning. He has worked with architects and designers at several universities in Australia and around the world, and was previously adjunct professor in architecture and design at RMIT University in Melbourne and Professor of Philosophy in Architecture in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Tasmania.
